Accuracy

To calculate reading accuracy, take the number of words read and subtract the number of errors. Take that total and divide it by the number of words read to find the percentage.

Student reads the passage with many mistakes.<BR>

Progressing Reader

Student is able to read the passage with a few mistakes.<BR>
90% - 94% accuracy
Proficient Reader

Student is able to read the passage with very few mistakes. <BR>
95% - 100% accuracy
Advanced Reader

Student is able to read the passage without mistakes.<BR>
100% accuracy
Expression

At-Risk Reader

Reads the selection word by word in a monotone voice.
Progressing Reader

Reads the selection with few signs of emotion or expression. May attempt to show emotion at times.
Proficient Reader

Reads the selection with SOME reasonable expression, appropriate phrasing, and intonation.
Advanced Reader

Reads the selection expressively, with appropriate phrasing and intonation. <BR>
Example: whispers, shouts, sounds worried, shows excitement with exclamation marks, etc.
Retell

At-Risk Reader

Student does not recall any details from the selection.
Progressing Reader

Student recalls some detail from the selection in random order.
Proficient Reader

Student is able to retell 3 or more important details from the selection out sequence.
Advanced Reader

Student is able to retell 3 or more important details from the selection in correct sequence.
