Response to Prompt	Excellent Presents a clearly focused main idea that addresses prompt.	Very Good Uses the writing prompt to establish a main idea.	Good Addresses the prompt, though the focus may shift.	Fair Attempts to address prompt but with little or no success in establishing a focus.	Poor Does not attempt to address prompt
Organization	Excellent Establishes a clear and logical organization.	Very Good Uses an identifiable organizational plan.	Good Shows some evidence of an organizational plan.	Fair Fails to organize ideas.	Poor Contains no organization or ideas.
Development & Details	Excellent Achieves coherent development with 3 or more specific and relevant details and examples. Effective transitions are used to bridge between paragraphs.	Very Good Has focused but occasionally uneven development; incorporates less than 3 specific details. Transitions are used to bridge paragraphs.	Good Has some development but lacks specific details; may be limited to a listing, repetitions, or generalizations. Some transitions are used to bridge paragraphs.	Fair Demonstrates little development; usually lacks details or examples or presents irrelevant information. A very limited use of transitions are used between paragraphs. Word Choice	Excellent Exhibits varied and precise word choice.	Very Good Exhibits appropriate word choice.	Good Exhibits a narrow range of word choice, often including inappropriate selections.
