Education Matters Speech Speech Beginner Speech: One to two minutes Common Core Standard: Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas. Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks demonstrating command of formal English when indicated or appropriate. This is the first in a series of speeches. This speech focuses on presentation basics such as posture, volume, clarity, content and preparedness. 	Emergent 1 pts	Approaching 2 pts	Meets 3 pts	Exceeds 4 pts
Preparedness	Emergent Student does not seem at all prepared to present.	Approaching The student is somewhat prepared, but it is clear that rehearsal was lacking.	Meets Student seems fairly prepared but might have needed a couple more rehearsals.	Exceeds Student is completely prepared and has obviously rehearsed.
Topic and Details	Emergent There is no topic.	Approaching Topic is unclear and only a few details are used to explain.	Meets Topic is somewhat clear and details are used to support it.	Exceeds Topic is evident and all details are used to support it.
Posture and Eye Contact	Emergent Slouches and/or does not look at people during the presentation.	Approaching Sometimes stands up straight and establishes eye contact.	Meets Stands up straight and establishes eye contact with everyone in the room during the presentation.	Exceeds Stands up straight, looks relaxed and confident. Establishes eye contact with everyone in the room during the presentation.
Volume	Emergent Volume often too soft to be heard by all audience members.	Approaching Volume is loud enough to be heard by all audience members at least 80% of the time.	Meets Volume is loud enough to be heard by all audience members 90% of the time.	Exceeds Volume is loud enough to be heard by all members throughout the presentation.
