Working towards the Standard

The thesis statement is not clearly developed and reasons are not given to clearly explain what the essay is about. Triads not present.
Meeting the Standard

The thesis statement addresses the topic of the essay. There may only be one or two explanations given in the thesis statement.
Exceeding the Standard

The thesis statement addresses the topic clearly and contains a triad or three explanations or reasons. There is a hook or a question to lead into the thesis statement.
Development/Elaboration

Working towards the Standard

There are no transitional phrases and limited use of transitional words. There are no paragraphs and little organisation of sequence.
Meeting the Standard

Adequate use of transitional words and phrases. Sequence may be disjointed but overall there are three paragraphs that develop the three points mentioned in the thesis statement.
Exceeding the Standard

Shape the overall organisation, sequence and
presentation of a text to convey
ideas clearly
and effectively using transitional words and phrases.
Conventions

Working towards the Standard

Simple sentences and compound sentences are used mostly. Strong verbs are not included.
Meeting the Standard

There is some
use of sentence lengths, structures and
subjects. Strong verbs may not be included.
Exceeding the Standard

Provide clarity and emphasis in writing, using
a variety of sentence lengths, structures and
subjects. Strong verbs included.
Grammar

Working towards the Standard

Spelling errors for simple words. Writing in one tense is inconsistent. Punctuation and grammar errors are evident.
Meeting the Standard

Simple words are spelled correctly although words that are two or more syllables may be spelled incorrectly. Tense may shift throughout the writing. Punctuation and grammar may be inconsistent.
Exceeding the Standard

Spell correctly most words. Write consistently in one tense (past, present). Punctuation and grammar mostly correct.
