Student stands with feet shoulder width apart, hands at side 50% of time. Student needs several reminders from teacher and may have some additional movement.
Good

Good Posture
Students stands with feet shoulder width apart, hands at side 80% of the time. May need an occasional reminder from teacher.
Excellent

Excellent posture
Student stands with feet shoulder width apart, hands at side 100% of the time--needs no reminders from the teacher.
Breath Support

Breath management, inhalation, sustain and phrasing.

Poor

Poor breath support. No apparent breath support. There are some very bad habits such as gasping for breath or shallow breathing. Does not sing long phrases, and takes breaths too frequently.
Fair

Fair breath support. Student is able to sing moderately long phrases, breathes in sensible places and is conscious of breathing. However, there are either deficiencies or some bad habits.
Good

Good breath support. Generally good breathing, sings phrases appropriately, tone quality is supported, and vibrato - if present - is free and natural.
Excellent

Excellent breath support. Student has learned technique and can manage breathing very well.
Tone Quality

Focus, magnitude, vibrato/freedom in the voice.

Poor

Poor tone quality. Voice is either breathy or nasal. Tension in the sound. Unnatural vibrato or tension in the tone. Vocal magnitude is either too much (pressed or loud) or too little (breathy and small).
Fair

Fair tone quality. Voice is somewhat breathy or nasal. There is no vibrato or some vibrato in the voice with tension in parts of the range, particularly range extension high and/or low.
Good

Good tone quality. Vocal timbre is clear and focused. Vibrato is natural or the voice is still young and does not have vibrato yet. The voice is free throughout most of the range, with a clear tessitura.
Excellent

Excellent tone quality. Magnitude is middle of the road, timbre is focused and beautiful. Voice is free and on the breath. Range extension is excellent and maintains quality.
Range & Tessitura

Tessitura, passaggio, and range extension high and low.

Poor

Singer has a very limited range and tessitura is difficult to determine due to lack of singing experience. Voice does not demonstrate consistency nor smooth transitions throughout the range.
Fair

Singer has a good range, a clear tessitura, although there are major shifts of tonal magnitude at the passaggio and there are limitations in either the high or low ranges.
Good

Singer demonstrates a wide range with smooth transitions between low and high. Tessitura is clear and shifts over the passaggio are well-handled.
Excellent

Singer has excellent command of his/her range and sings with freedom, focus and beauty throughout the range. Tessitura fits the standard voice part and there is a significant extension high to low.
Pitch Accuracy

Pitch, interval relationships, tonality and intonation.

Poor

Most pitches are performed incorrectly. Intervals are in accurate, singer does not maintain tonality and does not sing in tune.
Fair

Many of the pitches are performed incorrectly. Intervals are sometimes inaccurate, singer struggles in places to maintain tonality and has some intonation issues.
Good

Performed most of the pitches correctly. Maintains tonal center most of the time, sings accurate intervals and generally sings in tune.
Excellent

Confidently performed all pitches correctly. Sings melodic intervals accurately, maintains tonal center throughout and sings in tune.
Rhythmic Accuracy

Meter, tempo, rhythm

Poor

Most of the rhythms are performed incorrectly. There is no steady tempo.
Fair

Some basic rhythms are performed correctly; however, has challenges with some rhythms and difficulty maintaining a steady tempo.
Good

Most of the rhythms are performed correctly, with few errors. Maintains appropriate tempo and stays within meter consistently.
Excellent

Confidently performs all rhythms correctly and sings according to stipulated or marked tempi.
Diction
10 pts

Vowel enunciation consonant articulation, pronunciation.

Poor

Poor Diction
Student displays poor diction. Most words are incorrectly pronounced.
Fair

Fair Diction
Student could use some improvement on overall diction. Only 50% of the words are pronounced clearly and correctly
Good

Good Diction
Most (80%) of the words are pronounced clearly and correctly.
Excellent

Excellent Diction
All words are pronounced correctly and clearly.
Musicianship
10 pts

Articulation, dynamics, phrasing and interpretation.

Poor

No dynamics. No use of articulation. Most phrases are performed incorrectly.
Fair

Some dynamics are observed. Some articulation is performed. Some phrases are complete and musically accurate.
Good

Most of the dynamics are followed, and most of the articulation signs are observed. Most phrases are performed correctly.
Excellent

Student performs the piece with appropriate dynamics, phrasings, and articulation.
