Scientific Investigations: Summative Project 
A scientific investigation is a formal inquiry using scientific skills and principles. There are three types of scientific investigations, descriptive, comparative, and experimental. Your task is to describe why scientific investigations are necessary.

20 %

Student must include the following information in the product: the name of the law or theory; the scientist(s) that originally proposed the law; background information on the scientist(s); the original theory or law; how the law or theory has changed; when the law or theory was changed; the current/updated law or theory

Advanced

The student is proficient AND has included interesting facts about each type of scientific investigation.
Proficient

The student has included ALL of the required information and the information is organized in a cohesive manner.
Progressing

The student has included 5 required pieces of information, and the information is organized in a cohesive manner.
Beginning

The student has included 3 or less of the required pieces of information and the information lacks organization.

20 %

The student has found a minimum of 3 credible resources and a Work Cited page.

Advanced

The student is proficient, has included more than 3 credible resources, AND has provided a MLA formatted "Work Cites" page.
Proficient

The student has included references to 3 credible resources and a Work Cited page
Progressing

The student has included 2 credible resource OR has included 3 resources but not all are credible AND has included a Work Cited page
Beginning

The student has included less than 2 credible resources OR has not included a Work Cited Page
Grammar, Spelling, and Format
10 %

The student will use proper grammar, have no spelling errors, write in complete sentences, and format his/her paper into 5 paragraphs

The student is proficient AND has used I.C.E properly
Proficient

The student has used proper grammar, no spelling errors, write in complete sentences, and format his/her paper into 5 paragraphs
Progressing

The student has no more than 5 grammar mistakes, has 3 or less spelling errors, has written mostly in complete sentences, and has included 3 or more paragraphs.
Beginning

The student has more than 5 grammar errors OR has more than 3 spelling errors OR has not written in complete sentences OR has less than 3 paragraphs.
Introduction
10 %

The student will include an introduction paragraph that has the following components: attention getter and thesis statement.

Advanced

The student is proficient AND created a relevant attention getter which is one of the following: an interesting fact, anecdote, or statistic
Proficient

The student has included an introduction paragraph that has the following components: attention getter and thesis statement.

The student has included an introduction paragraph that has ONE of the following: attention getter OR thesis statement.
Beginning

The student has included an introduction paragraph that has NEITHER of the following: attention getter NOR thesis statement.
Body Paragraphs
30 %

The student will include 3 body paragraphs (one for each type of scientific investigation), one relevant example for each paragraph, and relates to his/her thesis statement

Student is proficient AND the example is clearly introduced, analyzed, and connected to the thesis statement.
Proficient

The student has included 3 body paragraphs (one for each type of scientific investigation), one relevant example for each paragraph, and relates to his/her thesis statement

The student has included 3 body paragraphs BUT the paragraphs are not related to thesis statement OR does not provide one example per paragraph OR paragraphs are not on topic (types of scientific investigations).

The student will include a conclusion paragraph that has the following components: restatement of thesis statement, and a concluding statement

The student is proficient AND has created a feeling of finality BUT also has left the reader wanting to know more.

The student has included a concluding paragraph that has the following components: restatement of thesis statement and a concluding statement

The student has included a concluding paragraph that has ONE of the following: attention getter OR thesis statement.
