Content	Unsatisfactory The story is not developed and the reader is not engaged.	Satisfactory The story has some interesting elements, but they may not be cohesive throughout the story. Some information may not be connected to the main idea.	Good The story is interesting and engages the reader. The writer has written for a general audience and has taken one idea and developed it.
Word Selection	Unsatisfactory The vocabulary is basic. Very little emotion or experience is expressed.	Satisfactory Evidence of some attempt to use vocabulary for effect, but word selection is not highly effective in describing emotion or experience.	Good Vocabulary is chosen for effect: description is vivid and the writer's emotional experience is well developed.
Organization	Unsatisfactory The supporting sentences within the paragraph as a whole are not developed in a logical order.	Satisfactory There is an attempt to put the sentences in a logical order, but some of the paragraph may be presented in an order readers may find confusing.	Good Most of the sentences are presented in a logical order, and readers should have little trouble following the supporting details.
Grammar and Punctuation	Unsatisfactory The paragraph contains 3 to 5 errors in usage, spelling and mechanics, some of which are distracting to the reader.	Satisfactory The paragraph contains 1 or 2 errors in usage, spelling and mechanics, but they are not distracting to the reader..	Good The paragraph contains no more than two errors. There is nothing in the spelling, usage or mechanics that is distracting to the reader.
Overall Impression	Unsatisfactory The writer did not complete the task or did not fully understand the task.	Satisfactory The writer has made an effort towards writing a descriptive paragraph, but has not written an effective descriptive paragraph.	Good The writer clearly understood the prompt and created a clear, engaging and enjoyable story. The elements of descriptive language are varied and shows that the writer can control his/her writing.
