The thesis statement matches the organizational strategy. The thesis statement is very specific which helps outline the students' argument.

The thesis statement matches the organizational strategy, but the thesis statement lacks sufficient detail that outlines the specific points the students wants to argue.

The thesis statement is not related to the passages and can be difficult to follow.
Level 1

The thesis statement does not match the theme of the organizational strategy. The thesis statement does not help structure the paper.
Organization

Level 4

The essay follows the correct essay form of an introduction, supporting detail paragraphs, and a conclusion. The student is very descriptive in each supporting detail paragraph. Good use of linking words.

The essay follows the essay form, which includes an intro, supporting detail paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the supporting detail paragraphs do not include sufficient detail. Some linking words used.
Level 2

The essay follows a paragraph essay form. It includes an intro, body and the conclusion. The body contains supporting details to the thesis/argument. Few linking words used.
Level 1

The essay does not follow the correct essay format and lacks detail. In addition, it is possible that the student did not include sufficient supporting details to their argument. No linking words used.
Punctuation and Grammar

Level 4

There are no errors in the essay. The student obviously used multiple reading strategies (i.e. reading out-loud) to fix all sentence structure as well as spelling and grammar errors.
Level 3

There are a few errors in the essay. The student obviously proof-read the essay but may have missed errors with sentence structure, spelling, or grammatical errors.
Level 2

There are several errors in the essay. The student may have revised the essay once, but made errors in sentence structure, spelling, or grammatical errors.
Level 1

The essay has not been revised by the student because there are so many errors within the paper. The essay needs proof-reading in order to give the student an accurate judgment on the content.
Sentence Fluency & Word Choice

Level 4

The essay includes strong word choice and sentence fluency. Each sentence is descriptive and detailed.
Level 3

The essay has good sentence fluency and word choice.
Level 2

The essay lacks strong vocabulary and the sentences are very simple.
Level 1

The essay does not have strong word choice or sentence fluency. The sentences lack descriptive words.
