Handwriting This rubric can be used to assess student handwriting in many different assignments.
	Does Not Meet Standards 1 pts	Approaching Standards 2 pts	Meets Standards 3 pts	Exceed Standards 4 pts
Line Usage How well are the students using their writing lines? Do letters set on the lines?	Does Not Meet Standards Many (5+) errors in line usage.	Approaching Standards Several (4-5) errors using lines correctly.	Meets Standards Uses lines correctly most of the time.	Exceed Standards Always uses lines correctly.
Spacing How well are students spacing their letters and/or words? Consistent?	Does Not Meet Standards Many (5+) errors in spacing.	Approaching Standards Several (4-5) errors using spacing correctly. Letters and words are spaced too wide or too tight.	Meets Standards Uses proper spacing most of the time.	Exceed Standards Always uses proper spacing.
Letter Formation How well are students forming their letters correctly? How well are students following the model? Students use a consistent slant.	Does Not Meet Standards Many (5+) errors in letter formation. Incorrect letter formations.	Approaching Standards Several (4-5) errors in letter formation.	Meets Standards Most letters are formed correctly.	Exceed Standards Consistently forms all letters correctly.
Readability and Neatness How easy is it to read the student's writing? How neat is the student's writing?	Does Not Meet Standards Many (5+) errors in readability. Scratch outs, poor erasures, strike overs.	Approaching Standards Several (4-5) errors in readability. Contains scratch outs and/or erasures, strike overs.	Meets Standards Easy to read. Good erasures.	Exceed Standards Extremely easy to read. Clean and neat paper.
