Reading Response Journal Reading Response Journal Students will respond to independent and class reading. Students must complete at least ten entries on fiction and non-fiction text every two weeks. 	Needs Improvement 10 pts	Good 15 pts	Excellent 20 pts
Quantity of Work for each Entry	Needs Improvement Entry is too short and too rushed to explain ideas and thoughts about the book.	Good Entry is appropriate in length for the idea, connection or question being explained.	Excellent Entry length shows the student put extra effort and time into responding to the book.
Critical Thinking	Needs Improvement The student's responses do not demonstrate critical thought about the text. Student response is a retell with no ideas or connections about the book.	Good The student's responses demonstrate critical thought about the text.	Excellent The student's responses demonstrate superior critical thought about the text. Student response includes several ideas present about the reading. The responses make you want to read the text.
Creativity	Needs Improvement Student response shows no creativity, purpose, or planning.	Good Student response shows developing creativity and ability to respond thoughtfully to text.	Excellent Student response is superior in terms of creativity, thought, planning, and purpose.
Language and Conventions	Needs Improvement Sentence structure and vocabulary is basic/or incomplete. Inappropriate use of capitalization, spelling and punctuation is demonstrated.	Good Sentence structure and vocabulary is developing. Overall appropriate use of punctuation, spelling and capitalization is demonstrated.	Excellent Sentence structure and vocabulary written above grade level. A consistent use of appropriate punctuation, spelling and capitalization is demonstrated.
Required Entries	Needs Improvement Student is missing more than three of the required entries.	Good Students is missing one to two of the required entries.	Excellent Student has all required entries. (Five for fiction text and five for non-fiction text)
