Poetry Portfolio Rubric 
Poetry Portfolio: This project is the final assessment in the unit of Poetry. This is a task wherein students compile original and selected poems from various poets showcasing one main theme as well as the use of imagery, sound effects, poetry structure and rhyming all presented in one portfolio. The students also have written summaries that are presented within the portfolio to demonstrate the ability to analyze poetry on various levels.

The poem is creative, but don't demonstrate a variety of approaches.
Established

Poem is creative and thoughtful. They are carefully written, but development or craft could go further.
Excelling

Poem is creative and original. It is evident that the poet put thought into their words and innovatively conveyed their ideas and emotions.
Literary Devices

Outcome: Uses and describes language forms and features, and structures of texts appropriate to different purposes, audiences and contexts

Beginning

The poem did not include any literary devices such as imagery, sound effects and rhyming pattern.
Developing

The poem uses some literary devices.
Established

The poem incorprates several literary devices which demonstrate creativity.
Excelling

The poem demonstrates varied and appropriate application of literary devices discussed in class.
Attractiveness

Outcome: Images enhance meaning of poem. Poetry neatly written.

The poem is messy or disorganized. Images are not related and does not enhance the project.
Developing

The poem shows some thoughtfulness in their presentation. Images were not related but were used to enhance the presentation of the project.
Established

The poem is attractive in terms of design, layout and neatness and 1-2 images are not related to the poems but overall presentation is good.
Excelling

The poem is exceptionally attractive in terms of design, layout and neatness. All images used are related to the poems and enhances the overall presentation of the portfolio.
Grammar & Punctuation

Beginning

There are numerous spelling, diction, or grammar errors.
Developing

The poet's intended meaning is muddled by some spelling, diction or grammar errors.
Established

Some spelling, diction or grammar mistakes are evident, but do not diminish meaning.
Excelling

Proper use of modern English spelling, diction and grammar are employed consistently throughout poem.
Anaylysis

Student has demonstrated knowledge of how to analyze poetry.

Beginning

There are little to no written responses included that discuss the structure or literary devices in the poems, selection of theme or imagery included in portfolio.
Developing

Minor discussions revolving around literary devices, reasons for selected poems and/or theme and/or imagery were included in portfolio.
Established

Student has attempted to describe most of the structure and literary elements, reason for theme and imagery but not all areas are discussed completely .
Excelling

Student has included well written responses that analyze the poems structure and literary elements as well as explain reasons for theme and why certain poems and imagery were selected.
