	Excellent 25 pts	Above Average 20 pts	Average 15 pts	Below Average 10 pts
Mechanics/grammar	Excellent - Diary entry is neat and legible. - No spelling, punctuation, and/or grammatical errors.	Above Average -Legible handwriting. -1-3 combined errors in spelling, grammar, and/or punctuation.	Average -Legible handwriting. - 4-5 combined errors in spelling, grammar, and/or punctuation.	Below Average -Handwriting difficult to read. -6 combined errors in spelling, grammar, and/or punctuation.
Critical thinking	Excellent - Responses show the student has put a great deal of thought into what he/she writes. - The ideas are complex and show the student has mindfully taken on the chosen role. - Understands the prompt.	Above Average -Student demonstrates depth of thought, but may not be pushing his/ her ideas toward original ways of looking at the topic.	Average -Entry is a surface-level interpretation of the topic.	Below Average -Entry feels rushed and lacks much depth of thought. Does not address the prompt.
Content	Excellent -Entry is complete. -Student discussed events from a first-person perspective. Gave great detail.	Above Average -Entry is complete. -Student completed entries from the first person but failed to include detailed information.	Average -Entries are complete but lack first-person perspective or information about events discussed.	Below Average -Entries are not related to the prompt.
Organization	Excellent - Good support with no redundancy.(repetition) - Clear and easily understood. -Logically organized	Above Average -Clear/understood by the reader. -Shows some repetition or some material not fully organized	Average -Contains some development of ideas and a basic structure.	Below Average -Very little organization.
