Clutch release is to quick allowing the truck to lurch.
Poor
Clutch release is not smooth, stalling out the truck and or giving fuel before clutch is fully released.
Clutch play
Proficient
Clutch pedal depressed only half-way to the floor avoiding the clutch brake during shifting sequence.
Average
Sometimes clutch pedal is depressed half way to the floor
Poor
Clutch pedal is depressed all the way to the floor engaging the clutch brake
Double clutch method
Proficient
Timing and rhythm of shifting with the clutch foot and shifter lever working together synchronized with a two count rhythm
Average
Timing with foot and hand not at a two count rhythm. Needs to work on consistency.
Poor
Is unable to work foot and shifter hand in unison, floating or grinding gears.
Shifter position
Proficient
Feels for shifter and spring positions, uses a push pull method, does not force the shifter
Average
Has difficulty finding gear positions needs to work on feeling the spring wall.
Poor
Cannot find gear positions. Is forcing the shifter into gear.
Often putting truck into reverse instead of forward gear.
RPM upshift range
Proficient
Does not over rev or lug the engine, upshifts properly at RPM range.
Average
Needs to monitor the RPM gauge at shift point by glancing at gauge and listening to the sound of the engine
Poor
Not looking at gauge, guessing at shift point and over revving or lugging the the engine.
Acceleration through gears
Proficient
Once foot is off of clutch accelerates smoothly and easy
Average
Needing to work on lighter acceleration, slowly feeding the fuel to the engine
Poor
Should not be stomping on pedal resulting in jerking of the truck.
Regain lost gear while moving
Proficient
Able to regain lost gear without stopping the truck, properly revving the engine and selecting proper shifter position
Average
Frequently is able to recover from lost gear without stopping
Poor
Can not recover from lost gear, must stop the vehicle to start over from a lost gear
Stopping
Proficient
Uses brakes to slow vehicle to proper road/gear speeds does not coast more than one truck length, does not lug the engine. Keeps truck in gear until fully stopped.
Average
Frequently utilizes the brakes to slow vehicle and does not coast more than one truck length. Mostly keeps the truck in gear while stopping, Occasionally puts into neutral position when stopping the truck.
Poor
Does not use the brakes to slow vehicle to proper gear/road speed or puts shifter in neutral or coast more than one tuck length. Comes to a stop out of gear.
Double down on gears
Proficient
Can easily double down/ skip shift gears.
IE 8th gear to 6th gear.
Average
Occasionally can double down/skip shift on gears.
Poor
Can not double down on gears when slowing down.
Downshifting
Proficient
Able to recognize how much space and time is required to downshift before running out of space, is able to skip shift without grinding gears
Average
Occasionally is able to slow truck to downshift before running out of space to downshift
Poor
Is not able to recognize time needed to downshift before running out of space before downshifting or unable to skip shift
Downshifting with RPM's or speeds
Proficient
Glances at RPM gauge takes out of gear at 1,000 RPM's or below, revs engine by only 400 RPM's
Can downshift by either the RPM's or the speed of the truck.
Average
Occasionally glances at rpm gauge need to be more consistent in RPM usage, can occasionally downshift using the speed of the truck.
Poor
Never looks at gauge, guesses at RPM range and is not revving RPMs in proper range
Knows gear and peed ratio
Proficient
Is able to recall the road speeds for each gear
Average
Only able to recall road speeds on less than half of the chart.
Poor
Does not the road speeds the gear to speed ratios at all
