To communicate, we use sentences to build paragraphs, and paragraphs are used to build essays. When we write, we also want to develop our ideas. As you will see, this rubric indicates how sentences are scored and how the development of your paragraph is scored. Spelling	Poor There are 5 or more spelling errors.	Fair There are 3-4 spelling errors.	Good There are 1-2 spelling errors.	Best There are no spelling errors.
Topic Sentence	Poor The topic sentence is absent or does not correlate with the supporting sentences.	Fair The topic sentence is weak, but the supporting sentences focus around a shared topic.	Good There is an adequate topic sentence with 5 supporting sentences.	Best There is a strong topic sentence with 5 supporting sentences.
Word use	Poor The word(s) are not underlined, and are not used correctly.	Fair The word(s) are underlined, but are not used correctly.	Good The word(s) are used correctly, but not underlined.	Best The word(s) are underlined in the paragraph and are used correctly.
grammar	Poor The paragraph has 5 or more grammatical errors.	Fair The paragraph has 3-4 grammatical errors.	Good The paragraph has 1-2 grammatical errors.	Best The paragraph is written with correct grammar and structure.
