Student rarely or never contributes to conversation, even when asked to discuss writing assignments prepared for class. OR Student consistently interrupts conversation with comments that are irrelevant to the discussion, without providing insight to the topics being discussed.

Student regularly provides comments, but provides little or no analysis of topic. Student may provide summaries of topics previously discussed, but such summaries may be incomplete. Student may interrupt the comments of others .

Student consistently comes to class prepared. Student provides insightful interpretation of readiings, making connections between readings and other information introduced in class lecture. Students are able to move beyond summaries of the material to detect nuanced differences in arguments presented in various primary sources.
Attentiveness

F

Student often misses class. When student attends class discussion, he or she fails to exhibit interest or an effort to listen, often falling asleep, attempting to text during class, or displaying other forms of inattentiveness.
D

Student occasionally misses class or is distracted. Student is unable to follow conversation or summarize arguments if asked to participate.
C

Student occassionally misses class or is distracted. However, student is typically able to follow most of the conversation and can summarize arguments or discussion when asked. Student also makes occassional eye contact, or takes notes.
B

Student consistently attends class and participates in class discussions. Student is able to follow discussion and is rarely distracted. Student regularly exhibits signs of attentiveness such as note-taking or eye contact.
A

Student actively participates in class discussions and rarely misses class. Student is almost always prepared to contribute to discussion by commenting or reading journal entries and is able to synthesize points made by others and offer insightful analysis. Student actively take notes or distributes other signs of attentiveness.
