Book or Article Summary and Personal Response Rubric 
The student will write a summary of their independent reading book or article. Student will include the title and author. Within the summary, students will use a topic sentence that cites their book or article title and author. The summary should include the main characters, the conflict and resolution, a summary of the plot or article, and a personal connection to the book or article.

Transitions are used to move reader through the plot sequenced events. The main events of the story are clearly explained and give a clear understanding of the plot of the book or article.
Approaching Standard

The summary follows somewhat of a logical path. It jumps around a little bit, though. The plot and main events of the story or article are summarized.
Below standard

The summary jumps around a lot and is hard to follow. The summary is hard to understand and doesn't clearly explain the plot or main events of the book or article.

Personal Response

Your personal opinion of the book or article, a connection that you felt toward the book should be included in your report. Reasons for your opinion or connection should also be included.

Meeting Standard

The response demonstrates your personal connection to the book or article. It is thoughtful and shows deep thinking.
Approaching Standard

The response demonstrates your personal connection to the book or article. It shows some thought and deep thinking.
Below standard

The response weakly demonstrates your personal connection to the book or article. It shows no deep think skills.
