Organization	Developing Very difficult to follow and/or find a main idea, point, theme, because the writing has no organization. It seems almost to "babble."	Average There is an attempt at organizing the written thoughts, but the written points wander.	Good There is some organization making the piece easy to follow, but there are occasional written statements that do not seem to fit in their section.	Exemplary The piece is very well organized with strong headings and details appropriate to those headings.
On Topic	Developing The piece seems to wander to whatever thought the writer had at the moment, rather than focused on any particular topic.	Average Seems to have a main idea, point, or theme, but contains a lot of off topic sentences that make it hard to follow.	Good Main idea, point, or topic is clear and easy to follow, but contains some "distracting" off topic comments.	Exemplary Main idea, point, or topic is very clear. All details pertain in some way to that main idea, point, or topic.
Interesting/non-cliche Detail	Developing Piece does not contain any details, or contains details that do not move piece forward and do not hold the interest of the reader.	Average There is an attempt at including details, but they are off topic or contain cliches	Good Piece contains some interesting details but also contains some that are cliche. None are off topic or inappropriate, though.	Exemplary Piece contains interesting details on topic. These details engage the reader.
Grammar/Punctuation (Final ONLY)	Developing No attempt at correct grammar, punctuation, capitalization.	Average Some attempt at correct grammar, punctuation, and capitalization, but I found many errors.	Good A good attempt at correct grammar, punctuation, and capitalization, but I found several errors.	Exemplary Very good grammar, puntuation, and capitalization. I found few or no errors.
Flow	Developing This piece is hard to follow.	Average I can follow the writer's ideas, but it is boring or rough.	Good Though there are some boring or rough places, the piece flows pretty well and is not boring.	Exemplary This piece flows very well. It was easy to read and interesting, and I wanted to keep reading it all the way through.
