Ideas

These are the thoughts put down on paper. These are the events that make up the main events and the theme.

Below Average

Little to no effort was made when brainstorming. The ideas are brief, vague, and impersonal. There are only 2-3 things that are meaningful to the narrative.
Average

The writer took a decent amount of time to conduct the narrative. There are more than 5 important and meaningful parts that contribute to the narrative. The ideas are well thought-out and elaborated on.
Above Average

The writer went above and beyond. There are more than 7 important and meaningful contributions to the narrative. The ideas are very thought out and explained in the text.
Organization

This is the way in which you lay your writing out. Is it logical? Do you jump from topic to topic without a transition?

Below Average

There is no clear beginning, middle, and end. The events are all over the narrative and there is no sign of logical ordering. There are no transitions from thought to thought.
Average

The beginning, middle, and end are notable; however, the transitions between the three pieces are choppy and unclear. It is difficult to tell when the narrative moves on to another point.
Above Average

The beginning, middle, and end are clear. The transitions are appropriate and lead into the next topic with ease.
Word Choice

These are the words you use to describe characters, events, setting, etc. Are the words you use 6th grade material? Are they very plain, simple, and lazy?

Below Average

Words used are lazy. There are many repeated adjectives and verbs. Ex. "He was mean." "She was mad." "It was very hot".
Average

Words vary from time to time and the author put forth some effort to use 6th grade words. There are parts where the words are redundant, though.
Above Average

The adjectives and verbs are unique, thoughtful, and used appropriately. The author clearly tried to use a variety of word choice.
Sentence Fluency

Do you have a variety of sentence length? Do your sentences flow nicely?

Below Average

Sentences are consistently 5 words or less. There are barely any uses of commas or other punctuation used to extend sentences. Sentences are choppy.
Average

Sentences are varied, but not very often. There are some uses of commas and extending punctuation. The narrative flows, but it could flow better.
Above Average

Sentences are varied. There are short, long, medium-length, and properly connected sentences all throughout the narrative.
Voice

This is the tone of the writing. Is the tone the same throughout? Is the tone appropriate? Is the tone unique to the author?

Below Average

The author made no attempt to make the writing his/her own. It is very standard and plain. There is little emotion.
Average

The writer uses some words that help the writing be unique to their writing style; however, the overall tone of the piece is rather plain and boring. There is not a lot of creativity behind the "feeling" of the narrative.
Above Average

It is clear who wrote the piece. The words are unique to the author and the personality of the author shines through.
Conventions

Punctuation and grammer and spelling. These are the keys to good writing habits.

Below Average

There are more than 15 spelling, punctuation, grammatical, etc. errors.
Average

There are more than 10 but less than 15 spelling, punctuation, grammatical, etc. errors.
Above Average

There are less than 10 spelling, punctuation, grammatical, etc. errors.
