	Poor 1 pts	Fair 2 pts	Good 3 pts	Excellent 4 pts
Organization	Poor Two or fewer transitional words were used.	Fair At least three transitional words were used.	Good At least four transitional words were used.	Excellent Consistently used transition words at the appropriate time. (Five or more transitional words were used.)
Conventions	Poor A lot of errors in spelling and punctuation. Makes the text very difficult to read.	Fair Uses some spelling and punctuation correctly but there are distracting errors.	Good A few errors but most spelling and punctuation are correct.	Excellent There are no errors in grade appropriate spelling or punctuation.
Focus	Poor The writer does not stay on topic.	Fair The writing is somewhat clear but strays a bit off the topic.	Good The writer stays on topic nearly all of the time.	Excellent Writing is consistently on topic and keeps reader interested.
