IDEAS AND CONTENT

Refers to the genre specific message and how the writer responds and develops the prompt.

Poor

Writer does not use dialog or reference to evidence, examples, or comparisons relating to the prompt.
Fair

Writer does not use dialog to convey meaning of prompt but gives an example of prompt.
Good

Writer uses some dialog to discuss or compare prompt but shows little evidence or examples without reasoning.
Excellent

Writer uses thought provoking dialog to convey ideas and content response to the prompt. Uses solid evidence to convey examples and reasoning.
WORD CHOICE

Refers to the writer's ability create a mental picture for the reader through precise language.

Poor

Word choice is not developed in an academic format for the genre or prompt.
Fair

Limited use of word choice/usage does not differ.
Good

Word choice is at a functional level to convey a general meaning.
Excellent

Word usage is vivid, powerful, and explicit, writer shows with words throughout the text.
SPELLING-VOCABULARY

Refers to writer's use of academic specific spelling of words, use of outside sources, vocabulary development

No vocabulary pertaining to the prompt with significant spelling errors.
