Summary Paragraph Assessment 
The students write one paragraph summarizing the importance of being prepared to address diversity. The paragraph must contain a topic sentence, a body and a summary. Proper punctuation and capitalization is required.

Topic Sentence

The paragraph must begin with a topic sentence that presents a single idea in a concise and clear eay.

Poor

The paragraph does contain a topic sentence.
Fair

Topic sentence contains more than one idea and/or the main idea is not easy to understand. Or the topic sentence is some place other than the beginning of the paragraph.
Good

Topic sentence contains only one idea but the main idea is not easy to understand.
Very Good

Topic sentence has one idea and the main idea is easy to understand.
Paragraph Body

The body of the paragraph supports the topic sentence with meaninful details.

Poor

The paragraph does not contain a body.
Fair

The body of the paragraph does not support the topic.
Good

The body of the paragraph supports the topic sentence but also introduces a new idea that is unrelated.
Very Good

The body of the paragraph supports the topic sentence with meaningful details.
Summary Sentence

The paragraph ends with a summarize sentence that summarizes the topic sentence and the body.

Poor

The paragraph does not contain a summary sentence.
Fair

The summary sentence does not recap the topic sentence at all.
Good

The summary sentence recaps the topic sentence, but not the body of the paragraph.
Very Good

The summary sentence recaps the topic sentence and the details in the paragraph body.
Punctuation and capitalization

Capital letters, commas and periods are used according to grammar rules.

Poor

Capital letters, commas and periods are used correctly 49% or less of the time.
Fair

Capital letters, commas and periods and used correctly 50-69% of the time.
Good

Capital letters, commas and periods and used correctly 70-84% of the time.
Very Good

Capital letters, commas and periods and used correctly 85-100% of the time.
