Introduction & Concluding Paragraph

Exceeds Standard

Introduction is well developed. It states the main idea and the topic of the essay is clear. Concluding paragraph focuses the reader's attention back on the topic and ties the paragraph together.
Meets Standard

Introduction is starting to develop, it states the main idea but the topics of the essay may be unclear. The concluding paragraph summarizes the topic, but fails to give the reader a sense of finality.
Below Standard

Introduction is not developed, does not state the main idea. Concluding paragraph has no end to the topic.
Far Below Standard

There is no introduction, and there is no ending to the paper. Topic is not identified clearly.
Supporting Paragraphs

Exceeds Standard

Paragraphs begin with a topic sentence, have details and facts that support the main idea, and end with a concluding sentence that ties the paragraph up.
Meets Standard

Some paragraphs have an underdeveloped topic sentences.The details and facts show some evidence of supporting the topic. Concluding sentence may not complete the paragraph.
Below Standard

Paragraphs have no apparent topic, lack supporting evidence, and do not end with concluding sentences.
Far Below Standard

There are random sentences that are seemingly unconnected and do not support the topic.
Conventions

Exceeds Standard

Sentences are capitalized and have correct punctuation. Proper nouns are capitalized, commas are used correctly, and grammar is appropriate for the grade level.
Meets Standard

Most sentences begin with capital letters and end with correct punctuation. Grammar is appropriate for the grade level.
Below Standard

Sentences do not start with capital letters, there is no clear beginning or end to sentences, and very little punctuation is demonstrated properly. Grammar is not appropriate for the grade level.
Far Below Standard

Essay resembles one giant paragraph or sentence with no punctuation, capital letters, or grammatical accuracy.
