Basic Paragraph Rubric
	Proficient Includes all of the components of a clear and structurally accurate paragraph. 10 pts	Progressing Includes some of the components of a clear and structurally accurate paragraph. 7 pts	Beginning Includes none of the components of a clear and structurally accurate paragraph. 5 pts
Topic Sentence The topic sentence of the paragraph should give the reader a good idea of what will be covered.	Proficient The topic sentence gives a good idea of what will be discussed in the paragraph.	Progressing The topic sentence does not give reader enough information about the paragraph.	Beginning The paragraph does not begin with a topic sentence.
Supporting Sentences Supporting sentences should relate to the topic sentence and give detail.	Proficient Supporting sentences relate to the topic sentence and use detail.	Progressing Supporting sentences relate to the topic sentence.	Beginning Supporting sentences do not relate to the topic sentence.
Ending Sentence The ending sentence should summarize the paragraph without using the same words as the topic sentence.	Proficient The ending sentence summarizes paragraph without using same words as topic sentence.	Progressing The ending sentence repeats topic sentence often using the same words.	Beginning There is no ending sentence.
Organization Ideas are presented in a sequential and logical manner.	Proficient A sequence is used and all sentences follow logical order.	Progressing A basic sequence is used but 1-2 sentences are out of order.	Beginning No sequence or illogical sequence is used.
Mechanics/ Grammar Spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization all correct.	Proficient The paragraph has no grammar errors and no misspelled words. The paragraph has no capitalization and/or punctuation errors.	Progressing The paragraph contains 1-3 grammar errors and/or 1-3 misspelled words.The paragraph has 1-2 or more errors in capitalization and/or punctuation.	Beginning The paragraph contains 4 or more grammar errors and/or more than 4 misspelled words.The paragraph has more than 2 errors in capitalization and/or punctuation.
