This is a simplified rubric to be used in the intervention environment to assess elements of "good" writing in the areas of ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions and presentation.

-skillfully creates a plot that is logical and sequential
-has a conclusions of at least 3 sentences that logically and creatively sums up the piece
Sentence Fluency

The writer:
-has a variety of transition words or phrases to connect plot shifts within and between paragraphs
-has sentences that are skillfully constructed with appropriate variety in length and structure
Word Choice

Excellent

The writer:
-has at least 7 examples of relevant descriptive details (other than size or color) and sensory color
-includes creative adjectives, nouns, & vivid verbs
Conventions

Excellent

The writer:
-has few (2-3), if any, errors in capitalization, usage, punctuation, or spelling
-errors do not interfere with readability
