Composition/Understanding

4

Composition fills the paper. It is interesting and planned carefully. It meets all the following compositional requirements:
Has 4 or more objects that intersect (minimum of 3 intersections); some objects appear to go back. All objects have a clear sense of volume illuminated from one light source.
3

Composition fills most of the paper.
Composition is interesting and adequately planned.
Composition meets most of these Compositional requirements:
Has 3 or more objects that intersect (2- 3 intersections);
some objects appear to go back. Most of the objects have a clear sense of volume.
2

Composition fills 50% or less of the paper.
Composition is not well planned and ojects are not logically placed.
At least half of the
Compositional requirements are met: Some objects appear to go back in space. Some (at least half of) objects have a clear sense of volume.
1

No clear thought to composition- appears to be a sketch or study
Composition fills less than 50% of the paper.
Compositional requirements are less than 50% fufilled.

Technique

4

Clearly and consistently shows varying values from one light source.
Consistently
Shows 5 or more different values of shading. Includes all 5 principles of shading: highlight, light, core shadow, cast shadow, and reflected light
3

Tries to show varying values from one light source. Shows 3-4 values of shading. Missing some areas of value. Composition shows highlight, shade and at least one other principle of shading.
2

Shows little range of values (1-3). An obvious light source is not evident.
Much of the drawing has no shading on it.
Much of the drawing is smeared together, making it all one value.
1

Little to no shading is apparent.
Shows contour and cross-contour lines.
Composition is more about Line and not Value.

Craftsmanship

4

Great pride and care has been taken by the student to present a neat, unmarred final composition.
3

The piece is neatly done. There are a few visible stray marks or erasures. Paper may be a bit creased, crumpled, smudged. With a bit more care a good presentation would be ensured.
2

An attempt was made to keep the paper neat, but several stray marks are evident. Paper may also be crumpled. Stray marks detract from the overall appearance of the piece.
1

Composition shows signs of neglect. Little or no attempt was made to keep the paper neat, clean, and wrinkle-free.
