Beginning Band weekly Evaluation 
This is a rubric for beginning band students in their first year of playing. It is a general guideline for the skills they are learning. It is intended to help them understand what is expected of them and to give Mr. Nick input on their weekly performance grades.

Rhythms

This is the duration- or length of time- of each note and/or rest.

Excellent

The beat is steady and the rhythms are consistently accurate.
Good

The beat is steady and the rhythms are mostly accurate. There are a few duration errors but these do not detract from the overall performance.
Fair

The beat is somewhat erratic. Some rhythms are accurate. Frequent or repeated duration errors. Rhythm problems detract from the overall performance.
Poor

the beat is usually erratic and rhythms are seldom accurate detracting significantly from the overall performance.
Notes/Sticking/Pitches

These are the sounds of your notes if you are a wind player- or the sticking pattern if you are a percussionist.

Excellent

The pitches/notes/<BR>
sticking patterns were consistently accurate.
Good

Occasional pitches/notes/sticking patterns were incorrect, but does not detract from the overall performance.
Fair

A few pitches/notes/ sticking patterns are played, somewhat detracting from the overall performance.
Poor

Several incorrect pitches/notes/ sticking patterns detract from the performance.
Steady Tempo

This is playing with a steady speed that is appropriate for the piece of music

I tapped my foot and played all of the song with a steady tempo.
Good

I tapped my foot and played most of the song at a steady tempo
Fair

I tapped my foot and played some of the song with a steady tempo.
Poor

I did not tap my foot or play with a steady tempo.
Attention in Class

This is your classroom behavior.

Excellent

I always pay attention and listen to my teacher.
Good

I pay attention and listen to my teacher most of the time but I am sometimes distracted by others.
Fair

I occasionally pay attention and listen to my teacher but I am easily distracted and often disrupt those around me.
Poor

I do not pay attention and listen to my teacher. I am disruptive to the rest of the class.
Attendance

This is coming to class every day and having all of your materials with you.

Excellent

I come to class every day with all of my things.
Good

I usually come to class every day and I usually have all of my things.
Fair

I usually come to class every day but I am often missing some of my things.
Poor

I usually come to class but I am frequently missing some of my things.
Posture

This is:<BR>
1) having your feet flat on the floor;<BR>
2)your back is off the chair;<BR>
3) you are sitting up tall; and,<BR>
4) holding your instrument correctly.

Excellent

I consistently remember to check my posture and do everything correctly.
Good

I usually remember to check my posture but occasionally forget to do something.
Fair

I sometimes remember to check my posture but often forget to do something.
Poor

I seldom remember to check my posture.
