Foundation

Student effectively established setting and characters

Excellent

Protagonist is effectively established through first-person narration, with a clear personality and distinct point of view. Other characters are well-defined though their actions, appearance, and dialogue. Setting is appropriate to a Gothic story, and is well-established through use of concrete nouns and evocative adjectives.
Good

Protagonist and characters have well-defined characteristics but may be too similar to be distinct. Setting is appropriately Gothic, but the writer may not effectively use concrete nouns or evocative adjectives to create a strong sense of place
Fair

Protagonist is a well-defined character, but the rest of the characters are flat. Setting is underdeveloped and difficult for the reader to picture in his or her mind.
Poor

Characters are flat and lack personality. They are either nondescript or bland. Setting is vague or inappropriate to a Gothic story.

Plot is vague or unclear. The story fails to include key events that lead to a climax and/or one key event before the resolution. Plot fails to include Gothic elements.
Development

Effective use of dialogue and description to move the story toward a climax and conclusion

Excellent

Dialogue establishes strong characterization and heightens conflict. Description effectively creates a sense of place and establishes a Gothic tone and mood. Story build toward an effective climax and resolution.

Dialogue used to show characters in conflict, but may be too “on-the-nose” or ineffective at establishing characterization. Description creates a sense of place and moves toward a climax and resolution.
Fair

Stilted dialogue, or dialogue that’s out of place in the story. Description does not create an effective sense of place, or the story moves towards an anticlimactic ending.

The story includes an element related to the epic.
Poor

The story does not include a sufficient amount of elements that are related to the epic and are correctly written and easily read.
Evidence of Proofreading

Student demonstrates careful attention to rules of grammar, punctuation, and spelling

Excellent

Student demonstrates significant evidence of proofreading. Story contains few errors in spelling, punctuation, and/or grammar.
Good

Student demonstrates significant evidence of proofreading. Story contains few errors in spelling, punctuation, and/or grammar.
Fair

Student demonstrates some evidence of proofreading. Story contains some errors in spelling, punctuation, and/or grammar.
