Proficient The paragraph has a topic sentence that includes the main idea.	Advanced The paragraph has a powerful, interesting, complete topic sentence that introduces the topic of the paragrph. It grabs the readers attention and is creative.
Supporting Details	Limited Paragraph has no supporting detail sentences that relate back to the main idea.	Basic Paragraph has one supporting detail sentence that relates back to the main idea.	Proficient Paragraph has two simple supporting detail sentences that related back to the main idea.	Advanced The paragraph has three or more supporting detail sentences that relate back to the main idea and are creative and interesting.
Closing Sentence	Limited The paragraph has an incomplete closing sentence.	Basic The paragraph has a closing sentence that strays from the main idea.	Proficient The paragraph has a closing sentence.	Advanced The paragraph has a powerful, interesting, complete closing sentence that relates back to the topic sentence and makes the reader think further about the topic.
Figurative Language	Limited The paragraph is incomplete and does not have any figurative language.	Basic The paragraph has only one simile or metaphor that strays from the topic.	Proficient The paragraph has only one example of a simile or metaphor that supports the topic.	Advanced The paragraph has a creative, interesting simile and metaphor that relate back to the topic.
Mechanics and Grammar	Limited The paragraph has six or more punctuation, capitalization, and spelling errors.	Basic The paragraph has three to five punctuation, capitalization, and spelling errors.	Proficient The paragraph has one or two punctuation, capitalization, and spelling errors.	Advanced The paragraph has no punctuation, capitalization, or spelling errors.
