Writing a Folktale Play 
Write a 5-10 minute one-act play with at least two scenes. Must include descriptive stage directions and an exciting plot which conveys a clear theme. Must also include a relevant, well-described setting, character development and meaningful dialogue, and must be presented in the prescribed format: double-spaced, 12 pt font, Times New Roman. May be neatly handwritten with prior teacher approval.

Stage Directions

Excellent

The play includes stage direction which is detailed and effectively explains the characters actions, emotions, and props. Correct format is followed; stage directions are easily identified and set apart from dialogue by brackets.
Good

The play is somewhat inclusive of stage direction and includes some detailed character actions, emotions, and props. Stage directions are set apart through some other convention, however not in brackets.
Needs Work

The play has little stage direction which is confusing and is not very detailed.
Unacceptable

The play does not have any stage direction or stage direction is not relevant to the scene.
Plot & Theme

Exposition, turning point, rising action, conflict, climax, falling action, resolution all work together to convey theme. Theme must include one of the following: courage, family, the "Golden Rule"

Excellent

Plot is well developed and each action in the play contributes to the climax or resolution. Story line reflects student's original ideas. Theme is clearly demonstrated through characters' actions and dialogue.
Good

Plot is present but story is underdeveloped, lacking details, and/or some components do not flow in a logical order. Theme is present, but not fully supported by actions and dialogue.
Needs Work

Plot is unclear or confusing to reader. Theme is stated, however unsupported.
Unacceptable

Plot is not original. Theme is unclear or not present.
Setting

Describe each scene with vivid imagery.

Excellent

Setting is realistic, described in great detail, and present on all scenes.
Good

Setting is present for all scenes, but is not realistic or well described.
Needs Work

Setting is not clear before each scene, not present on all scenes, or setting changes within the same scene without and setting change indication.
Unacceptable

No setting at the beginning of each scene or setting is not relevant to the scene.
Characters & Dialogue

2-6 well developed characters. May or may not have a narrator.

Excellent

Characters are well developed through the use of interesting, believable, and meaningful dialogue. Dialogue sounds natural, has a coherent flow, and follows the story.
Good

Characters are somewhat developed through interesting, believable, and meaningful dialogue; however, characters' emotions, actions, and relationships could be further explained.
Needs Work

Characters are not well developed. Backstory is not provided, making characters' actions unrealistic. Dialogue confuses the reader.
Unacceptable

Characters are flat and add nothing to the story. Erroneous and/or uninteresting dialogue.
Conventions

Play format. List all characters and setting in the beginning. Use elements of good writing

Excellent

Play is typed, double spaced, and in Times New Roman 12 point font. May be handwriting with prior teacher approval. No grammatical mistakes. Cover page has title of play, student name, class period, and date.
Good

Play is typed or hand written. Contains a couple grammatical mistakes and/or is missing only one required piece of data from the cover page.
Needs Work

Play is typed or handwritten. Contains several grammatical mistakes and/or two pieces of the required data on the cover page (name, date, period, and/or title) are missing.
Unacceptable

Play is sloppy and unable to read. Many grammatical errors. Cover page is missing data.
