Definition Essay 
Students will combine all skills being studied in English IV to write a definition essay. This essay is standard paragraph form. The students will pick a term or topic to define and include an extended definition for the term or topic as well as examples to show support of that extended definition.

Excellent

Presents a clearly focused main idea that addresses prompt. It includes a clear extended definition for the term or topic chosen.
Good

Uses the writing prompt to establish a main idea. The extended definition leaves room for interpretation on the part of the reader.
Fair

Addresses the prompt, though the focus may shift. An attempt is made to inlcude an extended definition but it is weak of poorly executed.
Poor

Attempts to address prompt but with little or no success in
establishing a focus. The writer simple uses the dictionary definition for the term or topic. No attempt is made to include an extended definition.

Establishes a clear and logical organization.
Good

Uses an identifiable
organizational plan.
