Introduction to Project
Lesson Objective
Students will understand the benefits of the food pyramid successfully.
Students will be able to explain how to use the food pyramid when selecting meals.
Students will describe ways in which they can incorporate the food pyramid into their eating habbits.
Content Summary
Students will describe what they think eating healthy means and if they eat in ways they would consider to be the healthiest.
Students will be told about the food pyramid and asked if they eat any of the foods located in it.
Assessment Strategy
The class will be assessed by describing the difference between what they eat and what they now know is healthy to eat, according to the food pyramid.
Content 1
Lesson Objective
Students will use their new knowledge on the food pyramid to compare and contrast what they eat verses what they should eat.
Content Summary
Students will write about and describe their favorite meal that contains as many food items found on the food pyramid as possible.
Students must then list the number of foods found on the food pyramid as it relates to their favorite food/meals and compare them to what they should be eating, according to the food pyramid to determine their healthy eating and not so healthy eating habbits.
Assessment Strategy
As the projects are under way, the teacher will remind students that their progressive knowledge of their findings on the food pyramid need to be tracked, as the teacher will be checking on each group to see what they are learning.
Content 2
Lesson Objective
Students will learn how some foods they already eat may be healthy by creating their own food pyramids.
Content Summary
Students will build their own version of the food pyramid by using only the foods they already eat and are their favorite foods as the category items.
Students will research and discuss how to eat these foods in a healthy way to get the most out of what they already eat daily.
Assessment Strategy
Students will be assessed on how well they construct their version of the food pyramid and how accurately items are placed under each category.
Students must describe foods using adjectives such as color(s), texture, smell, taste, etc...
Content 3
Lesson Objective
Students will build models of the foods found in a single category on the food pyramid.
Content Summary
Each group of students will select a category of their choice on the food pyramid and construct a model for some of the foods found in the category by using play dough.
The food models need to be colorful and easily recognizable because models will be presented to class after completion.
Assessment Strategy
Students will be assessed on how close their model resembles the actual food as well as their knowledge on the food models and their nutrional benefits as they relate to the food pyramid.
Students must create durable play dough models as the models will be used later as displays amongst the classroom.
Celebration
Lesson Objective
Students will present their project to the class in a way that depicts their knowledge on their findings of the food pyramid in an educatinal way that wraps up this unit.
Content Summary
Students will have completed several worksheets that will have taught them the importance of the food pyramid.
Students must present their research findings to the class with presentations on the benefits of the food pyramid and create a drawing for breakfast, lunch, and dinner that shows the food pyramid's use.
Assessment Strategy
The teacher will have students display their food models around the classroom and will go around the class and hold up a model and students will be chosen, at random, to name the food, describe ways to prepare/eat it, explain its nutritional value, and tell its place on the food pramid.
