Passing (B-/C+)

Centers on an interesting, if straightforward, issue or question. May fail to control scope or analysis, narrowly constrict scope of analysis or change focus of analysis over course of essay.
Deficient (C/C-)

25 %

Persuasively and economically demonstrates thesis of paper in a carefully paragraphed and logically constructed argument. Subordinates minor insights to major ones. Possesses clear and forceful transitions and topic sentences.
Honors (A-/B+)

Demonstrates thesis of paper, but not as persuasively or economically as possible. Paper possesses a clear and effective organizational structure. Thoughtfully paragraphed with clear transitions.
Satisfactory (B)

Passing (B-/C+)

Argument changes or weakens over the course of the paper or wanders from main thesis. Transitions ineffective or missing.
Deficient (C/C-)

Argument is repetitive, poorly paragraphed, and unconvincing. Few clear topic sentences or transitions between paragraphs.
Failing (F)

Lacks paragraphing, structure, or coherence.
Component Grade
Analysis & Use of Evidence
25 %

Evidence is used to persuade our readers to accept our claims. Analysis interprets evidence in order to support, test, and/or refine a claim.

Exceptional (A+/A)

Demonstrates a command of the evidence and supporting analysis. Integrates critical insights into fabric of argument. Consistently marshals relevant evidence and appropriately uses that evidence to build argument.
Honors (A-/B+)

Demonstrates an understanding of the evidence. Marshals relevant evidence and supporting analysis. Appropriately uses that evidence to build argument.
Satisfactory (B)

Reveals a sensitivity to the evidence, but often fails to explain its meaning and significance in order to connect it to the argument of the paper. Analysis sometimes veers away from difficulties that might complicate the argument
Passing (B-/C+)

Focuses on interesting and relevant evidence, but fails to analyze that evidence or explain its function in support of the argument.
Deficient (C/C-)

Uses evidence, but does so ineffectively. Evidence handled in a sloppy or perfunctory manner. Frequently falls into book report mode. Analysis tends to impose ideas in support of the argument rather than using evidence effectively. Ignores evidence contrary to the argument.
Failing (F)

Uses minimal evidence, without purpose or in support of the argument. Most analysis is subordinated to book report.
Component Grade
Style
20 %

The way you put together a sentence or group of sentences.

Exceptional (A+/A)

Writing is confident, engaging, genuine. Paper written with clarity, economy, and personal flair. Communicates a passion for historical inquiry.
Honors (A-/B+)

Writing is clear, fluent, and precise. Effectively varies sentence construction and rhythm.
Satisfactory (B)

Writing is clear, concise, and relatively free of grammatical errors.
Passing (B-/C+)

Writing is wordy and awkward. Occasional grammatical errors and poor sentence constructions that detract from clarity and persuasiveness of the paper.
Deficient (C/C-)

Writing has little sense of style. It is choppy, stilted, or numbingly repetitive in its sentence structure. Numerous grammatical or proofreading errors prove distracting to the reader. Argument obscured by breakdowns in writing.
Failing (F)

Errors and awkward constructions (run-ons, sentence fragments) suggest little effort or care. Numerous breakdowns in writing completely obscure argument.
