Synthesis

The question requires you to synthesize a variety of sources into a well-written essay. Refer to the sources to develop your position and cite them accurately Argument should be central; the sources should support your argument. Avoid merely summarizing sources

Impressive

Papers earning a score of 9 are especially sophisticated in their argument, through in development, or impressive in their control of language.
Effective

Papers earning a score of 8 effectively develop a position by synthesizing at least 3 sources. The evidence and explanations used are appropriate and convincing. Their prose demonstrates a consistent ability to control a wide range of elements of effective writing.
Adequate

Papers earning a score of 6 adequately develop a position by adequately synthesizing at least three of the sources. The evidence and explanations used are appropriate and sufficient. The language may contain lapses in diction or syntax, but generally the prose is clear.
Inadequate

Papers earning a score of 4 inadequately develop a position synthesizing at least 2 sources, but the evidence or explanations used may be inappropriate, insufficient or less convincing. The sources may dominate rather than the position taken. The prose is inconsistent.
Little Success

Papers earning a score of 2 demonstrate little success in developing a position. They may merely allude to konwledge gained from reading the sources rather than citing. These papers may have misread the sources, fail to develop a position , or substitute a simpler task by merely summarizing the sources. The prose of a 2 is simplistic, has consistent weaknesses in writing, such as grammatical problems, a lack of development or organizatin, or a lack of control.
Blank or off topic

Blank papers, not turned in papers or off topic papers all receive a 0.<BR>
Merely restating the prompt receives no credit.
