Horror & Suspense Short Story (Edgar Allan Poe Devices)) 
Students will create their own horror/suspense short story, focusing on several components: (1) the five of the nine elements of Gothic Literature) (B) Atmosphere (C) An ancient prophecy (D) Omens and Visions (E) Supernatural or inexplicable events (F) High, overwrought emotion (G) Women in distress (H) Women threatened by a powerful, tyrannical man, (I) Gloom and horror through metonymy (thunderstorms = terror; rain = sorrow, etc). (2) characterization, (3) point of view and (4) grammar.

Use of setting is clearly Poe writing style: usually an old castle, Gothic architecture, ruined scenery - includes decay and deterioration to a landscape that was once thriving.
Point of view is clear, use of first person, unnamed narrator is easily detected by the reader.

Use of setting is somewhat clear using Poe style, at times is difficult for reader to clearly identify setting. Point of view somewhat clear, use of first or unnamed narrator is hard to identify.
