Homemade Musical Instrument Project Rubric
Objective: Students will research how musical instruments make sounds. Students will construct and present a homemade musical instrument from recycled materials. They will be required to play at least three distinct pitches using their instrument and explain how they produced the different pitches. Students will use scientific terminology from our current unit of study to explain how their instrument produces sound and changes from a high pitch to a lower pitch.

Quality of Construction
Exceeds Standard
The instrument is well-constructed and visually appealing. It is sturdy, neat, and will stand up to repeated playing over a period of time.
Meets Standard
The instrument reflects some effort on construction and presentation. It is reasonably sturdy and neat and will stand up to being played more than once.
Approaches Standard
The instrument reflects some alteration to an existing form to "make" the instrument, may be fragile, and may not stand up to being played more than once. The overall presentation is unfinished or plain.
Below Standard
The instrument reflects an existing form with little or no alteration. Pieces may be missing or falling off. Seems "slapped together" in a hurry. The overall presentation is unfinished.
Total Points
Quality of Sound
Exceeds Standard
Student can produce good-quality sounds on the instrument and explain how the sound is produced using many scientific vocabulary terms presented during this unit of study accurately and effectively.
Meets Standard
Student is able to produce a good-quality sound on the instrument with a simple explanation that uses most of the scientific vocabulary presented in this unit of study accurately and effectively with minimal prompting
Approaches Standard
Student is able to produce a basic sound on the instrument. A simple explanation is provided that requires frequent prompting to use some of the scientific vocabulary that has been presented in this unit
Below Standard
Student is unable to produce a sound on the instrument and even with significant prompting can not use the scientific vocabulary presented in this unit to explain how a sound could be produced
Total Points
Change of Pitch
Exceeds Standard
Student is able to demonstrate and explain 3 different pitches using their instrument
Meets Standard
Student is able to demonstrate and partially explain 3 different pitches using their instrument
Approaches Standard
Student only produces two or less pitches but can explain how the pitches are produced by their instrument
Below Standard
Student is unable to produce changes of pitch using their instrument.

Approaches Standard
Student presented instrument, explained how it worked using appropriate terminology, and played different pitches with some help from the teacher.
Below Standard
Student refused to present instrument, explain the instrument, and/or play for the teacher.
