Introduction/Thesis
Exemplary
Includes necessary components of introduction (hook, title/author, background, thesis) and thesis is stated in a clear and direct way.
Satisfactory
Includes most of the components of introduction and thesis is stated in a clear and direct way.
Proficient
A few of the components are missing and the thesis is not a direct lead in to the topics of the body paragraphs.
Minimal
Introduction does not relate to body of the essay and thesis is weak.
Unsatisfactory
Essay is not evident of an introduction and/or thesis statement.
Body Paragraphs (minimum of three)
Exemplary
Body paragraphs organized in a structured way (topic, intro, lead in to topic, literary support given, relation to thesis, transition) and fully explain initial intent of paper.
Satisfactory
Paragraphs are organized and necessary components available but are lacking in a cohesive flow.
Proficient
Organization is lacking and a few of the necessary components are missing, thus leading to an incomplete paragraph(s).
Minimal
Body paragraphs provided do not aid in development of thesis.
Unsatisfactory
Body paragraphs are not provided.
Structure and Organization
Exemplary
Paragraphs are well developed and appropriately divided; ideas linked with smooth and effective transitions.
Satisfactory
Competent organization, without sophistication. Competent paragraph structure; lacking in effective transitions.
Proficient
Limited attempts to organize around a thesis; paragraphs are mostly stand-alone with weak or non-evident transitions.
Minimal
Organization, while attempted, was unsuccessful. Paragraphs were simple, disconnected and formulaic. No evident transitions or planned sequence.
Unsatisfactory
Organization, if evident, is confusing and disjointed; paragraph structure is weak; transitions are missing, inappropriate and/or illogical.
Paragraph structure is a single and/or rambling paragraph or series of isolated paragraphs
Grammar and Mechanics
Exemplary
Sentence structure is effective, powerful, and varied; virtually free of punctuation, spelling, and capitalization errors.
Satisfactory
Effective and varied sentences; errors due to lack of proofreading; contains occasional punctuation spelling, or capitalization
Proficient
Formulaic sentence patterns; shows errors in sentence construction; contains several punctuation, spelling, or capitalization errors.
Minimal
Simple sentences used excessively, errors in structure; contains many serious errors in punctuation, capitalization, and spelling
Unsatisfactory
Contains multiple and serious errors in sentence structure (run-ons, fragments); frequent errors in spelling and capitalization, inaccurate punctuation.
