*Can explain story elements and can retell the story.
*Self-selects a "just right" book which has not yet been read.
*Shows excitement in reading and is not easily distracted.
B-Meets the Standard(s)

*Meets reading 4 books or book equivalent on grade-level.
*Reads @ least 3 different genres.
*Maintains reading log.
*Reads at least 80 - 89% of the time.
*Aware of the story elements and can retell some parts of the story.
*Self-selects book that has not been read; Book is not "just right."
*Shows interest in reading, but takes short breaks.
C-Approaches the Standard(s)

*Reads 3 books or book equivalent on grade-level.
*Reads @ least 2 different genres.
*Reading log is simple with some organization.
*Reads 70 - 79% of the time.
*Names important characters and other story elements, but is not able to retell the story.
*Self-selects a book that has been read before.
*Show minimal interest in reading; moves frequently for short breaks.
D-Does not yet meet the Standard(s)

*Reads 2 books or book equivalent on grade-level.
*Reads only 1 genre.
*No reading log is evident.
*Reads <69% or less of the time.
*Cannot retell reading.
* Not able to self-select "just right" books; Teacher/Librarian needed.
*Does not show interest in reading; pretends to read. Mostly looks around and plays with things.
