Safety

Students take preventive measures to avoid accidents and personal injury to self and others by
identifying health and safety hazards and using the safety gear and safety procedures set in place for welding with a variety of welding systems

Poor

Student refuses to use safety gloves, welding shield and/or welding curtains where applicable. Is not allowed to use welders until habits change.
Fair

Student is beginning to understand why safety rules and safety equipment is available for use. Many reminders still needed.
Good

Student is developing safer habits and follows most safety rules with few reminders
Excellent

Student is confidently using the welders and all safety gear needed to perform any welds needed.
Demonstrate Knowledge of Process

Choose and set up a welder and with shielding gas for use based on the thickness and type of metal being used.

Poor

Student needs constant reminders on how to set up the welder and where to set the volume of gas.
Fair

Student attempts a welder set up but according to sound and weld quality shows that more reminders on proper set up are needed.
Good

Student has few questions on welder set up and is producing good looking welds.
Excellent

Student is confidently using the correct welder based on needed application and has few issues in general.
Weld Quality

Identify typical weld types; (plug, slot, stud etc)
Identify typical weld positions; e.g., flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead
5.3 list and describe the basic weld joints; e.g., butt, lap, tee, corner, edge
Prepare and clean all surfaces to be welded
Make light-gauge fillet welds in the flat and horizontal positions, using GMAW and/or FCAW
equipment

Poor

Student has welded some but is not improving at a rate typical of "improvement"
Fair

Many attempted welds. Many drips, blow throughs and inconsistent bead width.
Good

Welds are improving. Consistency is becoming a norm and effort to fix bad welds are being seen.
Excellent

Welds are usually even and consistent. Evident even heat penetration and very few "grind outs" needed.
