Format of a letter	Poor Student has not written their response in the format of a letter	Fair Student's response has some of the features of a letter.	Meets Expectationss Student's response has a greeting, date, body paragraph, and closing.
Introduced an opinion	Poor Student has not included a clearly stated opinion or has switched opinions in their body paragraph.	Fair Student's response attempted to include an opinion statement but it is unclear or confusing.	Meets Expectationss Student's response contains a clearly stated opinion statement.
Reason & Example/Evidence	Poor Student doesn't provide any reasoning or evidence to support their opinion.	Fair Student's response contains a partially stated reason that supports their opinion and has an example or piece of evidence to back up their reasoning. (Or student's response doesn't contain both elements needed.)	Meets Expectationss Student's response contains a clearly stated reason that supports their opinion and has an example or piece of evidence to back up their reasoning.
Conventions	Poor The response has many conventions errors or the errors impede comprehension of the response. (7+)	Fair The response has some errors in conventions but it doesn't impede comprehension of the response. (4-6)	Meets Expectationss The response has few if any convention errors. (3 or less)
