Connects picture with writing	Excellent Student includes connection to the chosen picture in a clear and understanding way.	Good/Fair Student sometimes refers to the picture in an understanding way.	Poor Student is unclear about chosen picture.
Organization	Excellent Student establishes clear and appropriate paragraph structure and length. Beginning, middle, end.	Good/Fair Student establishes some paragraph structure with some coherence. Is missing one of the following: beginning, middle, end.	Poor Student has no structure or relevance to the picture. Does not include a clear beginning, middle or end.
Rough Draft Story Plan	Excellent Student created a detailed and well thought out planning sheet as a rough draft.	Good/Fair Student created a story planning sheet with few details.	Poor Student did not include a planning sheet or the sheet has no details.
Main Character	Excellent Student has included a well developed main character.	Good/Fair Student has include a basically defined character.	Poor Student has not included a defined main character.
Focus	Excellent Student establishes a clear central idea or story throughout the piece which engages the reader.	Good/Fair Student has somewhat of a central idea or story mentioned in the piece.	Poor Student has no coherent focus.
Conventions	Excellent Student has few mistakes, however, the message is clear. (spelling, punctuation, fragments, indentation, capitalization, etc.)	Good/Fair Student has many mistakes, however, the message is somewhat clear. (spelling, punctuation, fragments, indentation, capitalization, etc.)	Poor Student has so many mistakes that the message is not understood.
Length	Excellent Student includes no more that 8 paragraphs of appropriate length.	Good/Fair Student includes 5-8 paragraphs of appropriate length. Student goes over 8 paragraphs.	Poor Student includes 4 or fewer paragraphs of appropriate length.
