Organization and Length
40 pts

One of the keys of debate is the structure of the argument. Is it easy to follow? Does it make sense to the audience? Is it long enough to make the point without going on too long?

Below Expectations

Fails to meet one of the meets expectations but meets others.
Specifically the argument is
- disorganized
- Repetitive
- between 2:30 and 3:00 long.
-Takes a position that is unclear.
- Doesn't include a road map.
Meets Expectations

The argument is clearly organized and includes the following:
- A clear statement of the position.
- Is at least 3 minutes long.
- Includes a road map of the argument and then follows the map.
- Includes a clear conclusion.
Advanced Expectations

It is clear that the student has spent considerable amount of time both organizing and practicing for the debate round.

The argument is significantly different from their partner's speech.

The speech is of incredible quality and is at least 4 minutes long.
Quality of Argument
40 pts

How convincing is the argument? Has evidence and research been included or is the argument 100% opinion? Is the listener swayed by the argument?

Below Expectations

The argument fails to meet at least one of the requirements of the project.
- The opinion is somewhat convincing.
- Evidence is not used effectively or it is difficult to see what evidence or research is used.
Meets Expectations

The argument includes the following:
- A convincing opinion.
- Research or evidence clearly introduced in the argument. This could include statistics, charts, or any other form of evidence that helps to prove the argument.
- The argument is at least somewhat convincing to the average person.
Advanced Expectations

The student debate is so good that I recommend that he/she joins the debate team.

The argument is utterly convincing and believable. There was a tremendous amount of research done was it was evident in the level of expertise evident beyond the meet expectations level.

Can the speaker respond to questions about the subject? How effective is their response?

Below Expectations

The response to questions in insufficient in some way.
- The student only responds minimally.
-The student responses are basic and lack confidence.
-The student opinion is somewhat developed but may lack evidence or complete understanding.
Meets Expectations

Response to questions is intelligent and indicates more than basic knowledge of the issue.

Student has a developed opinion and is able to defend their opinion verbally.
Advanced Expectations

Responses to questions are exceptional and show a high degree of research and thought. It is clear the student has become an expert on the issue.

Student has both a strong opinion and is fearless when confronted by an opposing argument.
