Topic Sentence	Unsatisfactory Topic sentences are missing or unclear; paragraphs are not organized around identifiable subtopics.	Partially Proficient Topic sentences may not be found in every body paragraph, or may not identify distinct elements of the point; there is evidence, though of some effort to divide the topic into subtopics in the body paragraphs.	Proficient Each body paragraph begins with the topic sentence which connects to the point and is developed by the content of the paragraph	Advanced Each body paragraph contains a clear, powerful topic sentence that identifies a distinct element of the point and is developed by the content of the paragraph: content transitions smoothly from the previous paragraph
