Writer's stance on the argument is not clear. Argument is simple and not explained.

Writer states argument. Argument is somewhat developed.
Good

Writer clearly states his or her position. Writer's argument is thoughtful, complex and thoroughly explained.

Evidence is not specific. Writer does not include pieces of textual evidence. Evidence is simple and not fully explored. Evidence does not support the writer's argument/thesis.

Pieces of evidence are included but is not thoroughly explained or examined. Evidence is not specific and/or does not support the writer's argument/thesis statement.

Pieces of specific, complex and thoroughly examined evidence are used. Evidence is quoted or paraphrased and clearly supports the writer's argument.
Grammar

The essay clearly has not been edited. There are numerous spelling, punctuation errors. Sentences are not structured correctly. Sentences are incomplete. There is no capitalization where it is needed.
