Analyzing Causes of A Recent Event
Write an essay in which you discuss the causes of a specific local or national event that occurred within the last three years. First REFLECT on the event, it's causes and effects. Then, RESEARCH the event, searching for causes and effects you had not yet considered. (You'll need two source articles for research and for documentation in your paper.) Prior to starting writing, Read CTTW Ch. 10, paying careful attention to the purple lined writing project at the end.

Causal Relationships & Analysis
Poor- C Paper
Some Cause and Effects of the event are mentioned and described, but little explanation of their relationship to one another is extant in the writing. Further elaboration on CAUSAL RELATIONSHIPS is needed.
Fair - B Paper
Causal relationships are defined in terms of "contributory, interactive, immediate/remote, and fallacious/questionable causes" and the relationship between the causes and their effect, the event, are put into context and fully explained.
Good - B+ to A Range Paper
Same as Fair but also add personal reflection on the event in light of the causes and effects. Long-term effects are also considered. Possible future effects are raised as a possible problem to consider in the conclusion.
Research & Documentation
Poor- C Paper
Two websites or articles are mentioned. MLA format used to document the sources is present.
Each source is used fairly. The evidence used is presented and evaluated for any inconsistencies or issues with causal claims.
Fair - B Paper
Two or more articles are used as sources with full MLA documentation done correctly.
Each source is accurately and concisely used to back up your analysis of the causal relationships. Your voice is assertive and the source material is used to support your own reflection upon the event.
Good - B+ to A Range Paper
Same as Fair but with MLA perfection and with sources that were carefully selected out of several good sources to fully support your essay's thesis. You didn't let the sources dictate the direction of the paper, but they may have influenced your own critical thinking, which is fully evident in the paragraphs.
Composition & Revision
Poor- C Paper
Essay was organized, revised, proofread, and edited, but there are still five (5) or more elements I found that don't follow the rules for good writing that we've covered in class.
Fair - B Paper
Same as Poor but with only three (3) errors or weaknesses.
Good - B+ to A Range Paper
No weakness that distract from the message of the essay.
