Essay Requirements	Excellent (A) Clearly introduces and identifies subject; offers background information to provide necessary context. Thoroughly analyzes the subject using rhetorical concepts (logos, pathos, ethos).	Good (B) Essay does a good job of fulfilling the requirements.	Needs improvement (C) Essay does an adequate job of fulfilling the requirements.	Poor (D, below) Essay does a poor job of fulfilling the requirements.
Thesis	Excellent (A) Includes a clear, well-written thesis statement that communicates your purpose and main point.	Good (B) Thesis statement is adequate, but could be more clearly written.	Needs improvement (C) A thesis statement is present, but weak.	Poor (D, below) No thesis statement can be determined.
Organization	Excellent (A) Well thought-out and organized. Follows a coherent sequence of events. Has an interesting beginning and ends solidly.	Good (B) For the most part, essay sticks to a solid organization. May occasionally lack focus/direction.	Needs improvement (C) Attempts to stick to a solid organization. May jump around or be confusing at times.	Poor (D, below) Essay is disorganized and very difficult to follow.
Participation	Excellent (A) Writer has participated in all required prewriting and workshop activities. All required elements have been turned in.	Good (B) Writer has participated in most prewriting and workshop activities. Most required elements have been turned in.	Needs improvement (C) Writer has participated in some prewriting and workshop activities. Some, but not all required elements have been turned in.
