Video Game Design Rubric 
The scholars will design a video game to entertain an audience that is appropriate to their age range. The game can be in any genre, but must have an ESRB Rating of T (Teen) or E (Everybody). See the link in Google Classroom for a description of these ratings.

narrative. The game is unique, well­-planned, and creative.

Did the student demonstrate a solid
understanding of the software for project development?

Student displayed little to
no understanding of the
software used.

Student is unable to demonstrate key features of the software in the game design. Student is
unclear about specific aspects of the project and/or design process.
Mastery

Mastery in the choice and use of software to enhance the project. Student
is able to demonstrate specific features within the software in their project and the software
used to program and design the game.
Intended Purpose

Did all elements of the project work together to serve the intended
purpose?

Beginning

No elements of the design fit the intended purpose of the project.
Partial

Elements of the project are not cohesive. Game is too simplistic or lacks depth. Navigating the
environments or menus is not intuitive. Some elements of the project are missing or lack quality.
Mastery

Game has high quality sound, animation, environments, and elements.
Game is fun, challenging, and engaging. Player can navigate the
environments and menus with ease.
Target Audience

Did the game meet all of the criteria for the target audience?

Beginning

The game is not appropriate to the target audience as described by the ESRB rating.
Partial

The game is somewhat appropriate to the target audience as described by the ESRB rating, but has some elements that are inappropriate.
Mastery

The game meets all of the criteria according to the ESRB rating and is appropriate to the target audience.
