Essay Rubric for College Freshman
	Excellent 90-100 points 100 pts	Good 80-89 points 89 pts	Fair 70-79 points 79 pts	Poor 60-69 points 69 pts
Organization (introduction, body and conclusion)	Excellent Introduction provides clear thesis, paragraphs are well defined, provide topic sentences and relevant. Has clear conclusion that draws from ideas within paper and makes insightful, logical claim.	Good Introduction provides thesis, body of paper lacks topic sentences. Conclusion relates to ideas of topic and reader understands what he should take away from paper.	Fair The introduction lacks a thesis, paragraphs stray from focus, and conclusion fails to add to the paper. Reader is unclear what he should take away from paper.	Poor Missing introduction or conclusion, does not meet minimum paragraph/word requirement. Lacks organization. Little thought expressed in the formation of paper.
Ideas (support for thesis)	Excellent Essay clearly shows perceptiveness and creativity. Argument is well-developed, supports thesis, relates to topic and is logically ordered.	Good Essay shows some perceptiveness and creativity. evidence supports the thesis, is relative to the topic, and has logical order.	Fair Essay shows very limited perceptiveness and/or creativity. Evidence not utilized effectively or is unclear, unrelated, or lacks logical order.	Poor Essay lacks perceptiveness and creativity, no support for evidence presented and/or information is unclear, unrelated, and lacks no logical order.
Mechanics (grammer, spelling, puncuation and word choices)	Excellent Perfect grammer, spelling, puncuation. Excellent word choice and used correctly	Good Few grammar, spelling and punctuation errors. some vivid word choice, most used correctly.	Fair Many grammer, spelling or puncuation errors, simplistic word choice and/or misused words.
