The student names either the time or the place that the story occurred in a complete sentence or phrase (depending on language proficiency level), but doesn't name both.
Good

The student describes in a sentence or phrase the time and place that the story takes place.
Excellent

The student describes in two or more sentences the setting of the story and adds a few characteristics and details.
Problem

Poor

The student does not name the problem or if they name the problem it is incorrect.

The student names and describes the problem, but does not use a sentence starter to help create a phrase or complete sentence (depending on proficiency level)

The student describes in a complete sentence or phrase the problem.

The students phrases or sentences were sometimes incomplete and were hard to understand.

The students phrases and sentences were complete and were clearly understood.

The students sentences included compound and complex sentences and were clearly understood.
