Invention

Since invention concerns finding something to say, we include those holistic elements—audience and purpose—in this category (Chap 2, K&M). Furthermore, since we often establish a topic or prompt, proper attending to the prompt or the form (rhetorical strategy or aim), we assess that, too (cf: 56b in Aaron).

Arrangement

Arrangement concerns the ordering of the text including both coherence and cohesion where coherence is tied to the old/new contract while cohesion refers to transitions. Conventional organization is the five-paragraph essay (Chap 3-4: K&M; Chap 6: Aaron).

Style

Style concerns the craft of word choice and figure development. It addresses tone, voice, and diction. Often considered the most rhetorical, it expresses HOW the writing impacts the audience, but without superficial layering of vocabulary and figures (Pt 3: Aaron; K&M: p 74-76).

Memory

Memory shifts the most depending upon the nature of the assignment. In research papers, memory governs the use of documentation. In literary assignments, it deals with reference to literary text and literary allusion. In expressive writing, it deals with the memorableness of the situation and thus relates to invention (K&M, Step 9; Chap 58, Aaron).
