Content	Poor The essay barely addresses the topic. It occasionally addresses the topic of What Freedom Means to Me, but strays other places frequently.	Basic The essay somewhat clearly addresses the topic. It sticks to the topic of What Freedom Means to Me, but may stray from it.	Proficient The essay very clearly addresses the topic. It sticks very closely to the topic of What Freedom Means to Me and does not stray from it.
Introduction	Poor The introduction is very weak and/or missing. There is no attention grabber or thesis statement. Main points and topic are not addressed, so the audience has no clue what the paper will be about.	Basic Introduction is good, but could be improved. May or may not contain an attention grabber and/or a thesis statement. The introduction does an ok job of setting up what the paper will be about	Proficient The introduction is strong and contains an attention-grabber. It has a thesis that contains the main points of the paper and does a good job of setting up what the paper will be about
Body Paragraphs	Poor The body paragraphs do not seem to connect back to the main points in the introduction. They are confusing and difficult to follow. They may or may not connect to the topic at all.	Basic The body paragraphs address the main topics from the introduction, but may also stray to other ideas. The paragraphs are mostly clears and somewhat relate back to the topic.	Proficient The body paragraphs clearly address the main points laid out in the introduction. They are very clear and are easy to relate back to the topic.
Conclusion	Poor The conclusion is very poor and/or missing. It does not mention any of the main points or the topic again, and the audience is not reminded of anything that occurred in the paper	Basic The conclusion does an average job of summarizing the paper. It may or may not mentioned all of the main points again.	Proficient The conclusion does a great job of summarizing the paper. It mentions the main points and reminds the audience of the most important aspects of the essay.
Mechanics/Style	Poor The paper is not double spaced, is missing a title, or has more than 8 errors in spelling/grammar	Basic The paper is double spaced, has a title, and contains 4-7 errors in spelling/grammar.	Proficient The paper is double spaced, has a title, and contains less than 3 errors in spelling/grammar.
